There's this Native American story that I quite like, and it goes something like this:

One day there was a forest fire. All the animals and birds fled, but for Hummingbird, who went down to the rivers edge, took a drop of water into her mouth, dropped it onto the fire, then carried on like this. The other animals laughed at her asking, "Hummingbird, what are you doing?" To this she replied, "I am doing what I can".

Kinda cool, huh?

Then there's a quote from one of Neil Gaiman's graphic novels, called "The Books of Magic". This extract is said by Titania, Queen of Faerie.

"There are only two worlds - your world, which is the real world, and other worlds, the fantasy. Worlds like this are worlds of human imagination: thier reality, or lack of reality, is not important. What is important is that They are there. These worlds provide an alternative. Provide an escape. Provide a threat. Provide a dream, and power; provide refuge, and pain. They give your world meaning. They do not exist; and thus they are all that matters. Do you understand?"

ZOMBIE

The Cranberries

Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence.
Who are we mistaken.

But you see it's not me,
It's not my family.
In your head, in your head
They are fighting.
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head they are cryin'.

In your head (x2)
Zombie (x3)
What's in your head,
In your head?
Zombie (x3)

Another mother's breaking
Heart is taken over.
When the violence causes silence
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme
Since 1916.
In your head, in your head
They're still fighting.
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head
They are dying.

In your head (x2)
Zombie (x3)
What's in your head,
In your head?
Zombie (x3)

BITCH

Meredith Brooks

I hate the world today
You're so good to me, I know
but I can't change
Tried to tell you but you looked at me
like maybe I'm an angel underneath - innocent and sweet

Yesterday I cried
You must have been relieved to see the softer side
I can understand how you'd be so confused
I don't evny you
I'm a little bit of everything
all rolled into one

I'm a bitch
I'm a lover
I'm a child
I'm a mother
I'm a sinner
I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your hell
I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way

So take me as I am
This may mean you'll have to be a stronger man
Rest assured that when I start to make you nervous
And I'm going to extremes
Tomorrow I will change
and today won't mean a thing

I'm a bitch
I'm a lover
I'm a child
I'm a mother
I'm a sinner
I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your hell
I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way

Just when you think you got me figured out
The season's already changin'
I think it's cool you do what you do
and don't try to save me

I'm a bitch
I'm a lover
I'm a child
I'm a mother
I'm a sinner
I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your hell
I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way

I'm a bitch
I'm a tease
I'm a goddess on my knees
When you're hurt
When you suffer
I'm your angel undercover
I've been numb
I'm revived
Can't say I'm not alive
You know I wouldn't want it any other way

THE SOUND OF SILENCE

Simon and Garfunkel

The Sound of Silence
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls."
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.
